Munster, IN : Bicyclist dies after late night accident on U.S. 20 on Sunday, 9th October 2016
A 50-year-old male bicyclist died early Sunday after being struck from behind by a car on U.S. 20 east of the Porter/LaPorte county line, police said.
Dead is Paul Howard, of Michigan City.
According to the LaPorte County sheriff’s police, emergency personnel responded to the accident scene at 11:40 p.m. Saturday.
Their investigation found Howard had been traveling east on U.S. 20 when he was struck from behind by a silver 2007 Audi also traveling east on U.S. 20.
According to LaPorte County Medical Examiner John Sullivan the accident occurred near Howard’s residence.
The accident occurred in front of a business at 1306 W. U.S. 20. Howard was found in the center turn lane and was not wearing reflective clothing and there were no strobes or lighting on the bicycle, police said.
When emergency responders arrived, CPRalready had been administered and they found Howard not breathing and with no pulse. He was immediately transported to Franciscan Health Michigan City where he was pronounced dead shortly after at 12:17 a.m.
Sullivan said the cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma.
The driver and his two passengers were not injured.
The Audi driver tested negative for alcohol and speed was not a factor in the accident, police said. U.S. 20 between Hitchock and County Line Road was closed for a short period during the investigation.
Michigan City police, LaPorte County EMS, Coolspring Township firefighters and the LaPorte County coroner’s office assisted at the scene.
