Walton, OR : Man dead, womem injured in a car crash on Old Stagecoach Road north of Highway 126 West on Saturday night, September 13, 2014
A young man died and a young woman was seriously injured in a car crash late Saturday night when an SUV rolled down a 40-foot embankment off of Old Stagecoach Road north of Highway 126 West, state troopers said.
A family member, who was out looking for the 18-year-old girl, discovered the crash scene early Monday morning after hearing the teenager's cries for help, Oregon State Police said.
Oregon State Police said paramedics pronounced Eugene's Canyon Arthur McCardel, 18, deceased at the scene.
18-year-old Hannah Smith, of Eugene, was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Smith's family reported she was missing to the Lane County Sheriff's office earlier that evening, officials said.
Crash investigators said McCardel and Smith were riding in a Mitsubishi Montero along Old Stagecoach Road. At some point late Saturday night, the SUV left the pavement and rolled down a steep embankment, stopping on its side on some railroad tracks about 40 feet below the road.
Oregon State Police said they don't know who was driving or what time the crash happened.
Nearly a day later, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said Smith's family reported Hannah as missing. Family members filed the report at around 8 p.m. Sunday, saying the 18-year-old didn't make it to her friend's house.
State Police dispatchers got a call from one of Smith's family members at around 12:30 a.m. Monday, reporting the crash off of Old Stage Coach Road. The caller "discovered the wreckage … on railroad tracks below after hearing her screams for help while passing through the area", Oregon State Police said.
Emergency responders said McCardel wasn't using a seat belt and was thrown from the crash. Smith was trapped inside the crash and emergency crews had to pull her from the wreckage.
