Bushnell, FL : Driver crashes into utility pole in Sumter on Wednesday night, June 29, 2016

A driver who had crashed into a utility pole in Sumter County had to be extricated from her vehicle with the Jaws of Life on Wednesday night, according to Sumter County Fire & EMS.

At about 8:29 p.m., fire and rescue crews arrived at County Road 573 in the Center Hill area to find a single-vehicle car accident, stated Fire Chief Leland Greek in an email.

The car hit a utility pole, and the 76-year-old driver was trapped in the heavily-damaged vehicle, Greek wrote.

It took 19 minutes for rescue crews using the Jaws of Life to get the driver, who was declared a “trauma alert” patient because of her injuries, out of the car, according to Greek.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center. Her condition is unknown.
The crash is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
