Rochester,MN : Mayo student killed in Illinois car crash on August, Friday 25th 2017

A rising senior at Mayo High School died Friday in a car crash in Illinois, authorities said today.

Cyrus Vance Bellephant, 18, died after the car he was driving apparently lost control, left the roadway and rolled over, landing on its wheels in a creek.

The crash occurred late Thursday night or early Friday morning outside of Manteno, Ill., about 50 miles south of Chicago.

Bellephant was alone in the car. He had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:51 a.m. Friday, said Dr. Robert Gessner, coroner for Kankakee County.

Gessner said the cause of death was "blunt force trauma from the automobile mishap." Bellephant was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the report.

Bellephant was visiting his grandparents, who live in the area, according to local officials.

"I can confirm a student death, and that we have a crisis team available to support our staff and students," said Heather Nessler, director of communications for Rochester Public Schools, "but I am not able to confirm anything else, nor is the district providing interviews during this sensitive time."

Bellephant played football for the Spartans as an underclassman.
