MATTAWAN, MI : Police dashcam captures close call crash on I-94 on Monday, December, 25th 2017

Dash camera video shows how close a Mattawan officer was to being hit when a passing car slammed into his police cruiser on Christmas.

The crash happened on Interstate 94 at 11:52 p.m. Monday, according to Mattawan Police Chief Scott Herbert.

The video shows the officer driving east on I-94 through considerable snowfall, making it difficult to see. The dashcam is still rolling as the officer pulls onto the shoulder of the highway near mile marker 66, closes his door and walks toward the scene of the crash.

Herbert says the 2014 Dodge Charger may be a total loss, but he’s thankful it wasn’t worse.

“This is a piece of equipment, so it can be replaced. But our officer can’t, so please move over,” he said.

The police department posted photos of the wrecked cruiser on its Facebook page Tuesday as a lesson to other drivers.
