WASHINGTON, IL : A two-vehicle accident on May, Tuesday 2nd 2017

A Eureka man was found dead Tuesday morning following a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 24 near Washington, authorities said.

Mark Scott, 56, drove a westbound sport-utility vehicle that crossed the Route 24 center line just west of Diebel Road about 5 a.m. and collided head on with a semi tractor-trailer, according to the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office. Scott was found dead in a GMC Acadia.

Tazewell County Coroner Jeff Baldi said the Peoria County Coroner’s Office is to oversee an autopsy on Scott.

The driver of the semi, James McCance of Lewistown, was uninjured, according to police.

As of about 11 a.m., no citations had been issued, police said. Alcohol is not suspected as a crash factor.

Route 24 between Main Street and Diebel Road was closed in both directions following the accident and reopened in the afternoon, police said. Diebel Road is also known as County Road 2900E.
