Tehama County, CA : 81-year-old Redding woman killed in three-vehicle collision southbound Interstate 5 Friday, February 5 2016

An 81-year-old Redding woman was killed Friday afternoon in a chain-reaction collision in a line of traffic that was stopped due to a previous wreck on southbound Interstate 5 south of the Sunset Hills exit in Tehama County.
The first wreck and the second collision resulted in a traffic backup on I-5 that extended about eight miles, the state Department of Transportation said.
The first crash — a three-vehicle collision — happened about 12:50 p.m. when Mary Garcia, 83, of Cottonwood was driving her car north on I-5 south of Sunset Hills, the California Highway Patrol said.
Garcia ran off the freeway, hit a dirt embankment and went airborne into the southbound lanes. Debris hit one car while a southbound pickup hit Garcia’s Hyundai. That collision caused Garcia’s airborne car to spin clockwise before it went off the road and landed on its wheels. Garcia and a 56-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries, the CHP said.
In the fatal collision that followed, Clayton D. Delaughder, 38, of Red Bluff was driving south in a Chevrolet 2500 HD pickup when he came upon the traffic that was stopped due to the first crash. He ran into the rear of the 81-year-old’s Ford Fusion, pushing her car into the rear of a Ford Taurus, which was pushed into the rear of a Toyota Scion.
Paramedics performed life-saving efforts on the woman at the scene and at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, but the woman died at the hospital of injuries to her chest and head, the CHP said.
The woman’s name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
The southbound lanes reopened about 2:40 p.m.
