Hickory, NC : Woman hospitalized after crash near Signal Hill Mall in Statesville on Thursday, July 6, 2017
A rollover crash on Signal Hill Drive sent a woman to the hospital Thursday afternoon.
The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was transported to Davis Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Officer R. Robinson of the Statesville Police Department.
Rescue crews responded near the intersection of Dale Street and Signal Hill Drive around 12:40 p.m. and found the aftermath of a collision of a Honda Odyssey minivan, driven by the hospitalized woman, and a Mercury Grand Marquis passenger car driven by Richard Wingate, 37, of Statesville.
The Grand Marquis struck the passenger side of the minivan after the minivan turned left off Dale Street and attempted to cross four lanes of traffic to enter the Signal Hill Mall parking lot, Robinson said.
Wingate said he was on his way to meet his girlfriend at the mall when the crash happened.
The collision caused the minivan to roll onto its driver's side before striking a pole, Robinson said.
“That pole probably saved her life,” he said. “She could have been ejected if her car kept rolling down the hill.”
Robinson said Wingate suffered airbag burns to his forearms and minor bruising.
“I’m just glad both of us are OK,” Wingate said.
Traffic Officer K. Brookshire is investigating the crash.
The Statesville police and fire departments, along with Iredell EMS, responded.
