Effingham, IL : Altamont man dies in 1-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 40 on Saturday, November 5, 2016

Illinois State Police said an Altamont man died after after a single vehicle accident that took place at 4:44 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Route 40 at Effingham County Road 1075 E, two miles west of Interstate 57.

According to police, Donald Verdeyen, 63, was traveling eastbound on Route 40 when his auto went off the roadway to the left and continued to travel east along the north ditch of US 40. The sport utility vehicle Verdeyen was driving came to rest in the north ditch of Route 40 just west of County Road 1075 E.

Verdeyen was pronounced dead at the scene by the Effingham County Coroner Duane Guffey at 5:05 a.m. Guffey said autopsy results are expected in six to eight weeks; the investigation into the incident continues.
