GARDEN CITY, KS : Eight hospitalized after fleeing vehicle causes crash in Garden City on Monday, 26th February 2024

Garden City police are pursuing multiple charges against the driver of a vehicle that fled police and allegedly began a chain-reaction crash that led to eight people being hospitalized on Monday.

Police responded to an aggravated assault call in the 3300 block of Eagle Drive, where 18-year-old Israel Rios was involved in an argument with several people before he allegedly fired a gun into the air and fled the scene in his car with two juveniles.

Officers spotted Rios’ vehicle at the intersection of Walker and Conkling streets and attempted a traffic stop, but police say Rios refused to stop and a chase ensued. Police say Rios evaded officers by driving onto side streets before the pursuit led northeast onto Kansas Avenue.

That’s where officers called off the chase near the Main Street intersection due to increasing traffic. But police say Rios continued speeding eastbound before losing control and striking five vehicles in the intersection.
