When Michael (Mikey) Morgan Jr. didn't make the basketball team his freshman year of high school, he decided to focus on another sport -- snowboarding. By the fall of the next season, he was teaching the sport to others at Afton Alps. It was the sport which would lead to his choice of colleges.
His love of snowboarding and the mountains took him to Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where he was majoring in business marketing.
"It was the only college he applied to," Morgan's father, Michael Morgan Sr. said. "His dreams were to go to school in Colorado and we weren't going to stand in his way. You have to let go and let them spread their wings and fly at some point. We wanted him to be happy."
The family had spent many vacations in Colorado over the years, visiting Keystone and Copper Mountain for skiing and snowboarding.
It was in the mountains of Colorado where Morgan planned to build a life but it was also where Morgan, 20, was killed Saturday, Sept. 22 in a one-car accident.
According to published reports, the driver of the vehicle, Bobby Bowling, 21, swerved to avoid two oncoming vehicles. The Toyota 4-Runner Bowling was driving rolled three-quarters of a turn and Morgan was partially ejected.
The two men and two female Colorado State University students in the vehicle were part of a group estimated at 40 to 50 people camping in the area and were headed up to the campsite around 7 p.m. that evening, said Colorado State Patrol technician Robert Nuse, who is handling the investigation.
Bowling has been charged with one count of vehicular homicide while under the influence.
No one in the vehicle was wearing seatbelts. The other passengers sustained minor injuries.
Morgan moved to Woodbury with his family, which included younger brother Joey Morgan, in 1995. He attended St. Pascal's Elementary School and graduated from Cretin-Durham Hall in 2005. Along with snowboarding, Morgan enjoyed his music -- he was a DJ at a local club in Colorado.
