CADDO, TX : East Lawrence teacher in stable condition after wreck on Tuesday, 10th April 2018
Alabama troopers are investigating a two-vehicle wreck Tuesday in which a Lawrence County teacher and coach, called a “staple” in the community, was injured, officials said.
The collision occurred at 7:10 a.m. at Alabama 24 and Lawrence County 434, said Capt. Joe Duncan, a state trooper. There were no fatalities, he said.
Lawrence County Coroner Greg Randolph, who also is the Lawrence EMS director, said two people were taken by ambulance to Decatur Morgan Hospital. A third person, Marshela Segars, 42, of Moulton, was taken by ambulance to Huntsville Hospital, Randolph said.
Segars was in stable condition at the hospital late Tuesday afternoon, according to personnel there.
Segars is a fourth-grade teacher at East Lawrence Elementary and is also varsity softball coach at East Lawrence High, said elementary Principal Casey Tate.
“She’s a staple in the schools and in the community,” Tate said. “She’s very involved in all three campuses. She knows all the kids and wants success for all her students.”
School officials learned Tuesday morning that Segars’ injuries weren’t life-threatening.
“Our prayers have been answered,” Lawrence County Schools Superintendent Jon Brett Smith said. “Law enforcement, ambulance services, hospitals, all those involved, have been great to work with.”
The wreck involved two SUVs and occurred at the traffic light at Alabama 24's Caddo intersection, troopers and a witness said. Troopers and a witness said a gray SUV was traveling east on Alabama 24, and a black SUV was traveling north on Lawrence 434 when the vehicles collided. There were multiple passengers in the gray SUV.
First-responders had to cut away material in the black SUV before they could extract Segars, who had been driving it, officials said.
Emergency responders, troopers and Lawrence County sheriff's deputies worked the accident scene.
No other information on the wreck was available from troopers.
