Roseburg, OR : Two-vehicle collision kills at least one on Highway 42 overpass on September 16 2016
A two-vehicle accident on a Highway 42 overpass killed at least one person and seriously injured two others at approximately 11:50 a.m. Two-vehicle collision kills at least one on Highway 42 overpass.
A spokesman with the Oregon State Police said the driver of a 2005 Isuzu box truck, identified as Christopher Bennett, 33, of Roseburg, was heading southbound on Interstate 5 before taking the off-ramp at exit 119 toward Highway 42. Then, for an unknown reason, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to travel down an embankment, up a steep grassy incline and over a guard rail before landing on Highway 42 and colliding with an eastbound 2007 Toyota Corolla. The car was driven by Marsha Wright, 62, of Roseburg, according to police.
Bennett, an employee of The News-Review, was driving a company-owned box truck. The company declined to comment on the accident.
Wright was declared deceased at the scene of the crash. A passenger, Patricia Van Arsdale, 22, of Roseburg, was extricated from the Toyota and transported to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg with critical injuries. She was later taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield.
Bennett was extricated from the truck and transported to Mercy Medical Center with minor injuries. He was treated and released Tuesday afternoon.
All those involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, according to police.
The highway was closed for approximately 4 hours.
Troopers are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash and are asking any witnesses who were not contacted by police to call OSP at 541-430-3334. Senior Trooper Mark Moore is the lead investigator.
OSP was assisted at the scene by the Oregon Department of Transportation, the Winston-Dillard Fire Department, Douglas County Fire District No. 2, Bay Cities Ambulance and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
