Detroit ,MI : Northbound I-75 ramp at I-375 remains closed after tanker truck overturned and caught fire on Sunday morning , May 24th 2015

The northbound I-75 ramp at I-375 remains closed after a tanker truck overturned and caught fire Sunday morning on the downtown Detroit interstate.

The tanker, which was carrying 9,000 gallons of unleaded fuel for Nour Light Petroleum Transport, exploded just before 9 a.m. on Sunday. It was extinguished within an hour.

Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said the tanker's driver was wearing a seatbelt and escaped unharmed. He adds that the trucker told investigators mechanical problems caused his vehicle's back tires to lock up and for the tanker to overturn.

A stretch of both interstates was shut down for the initial cleanup, but reopened Sunday night.

The Michigan Department of Transportation must determine the stability of the I-75 ramp before it can reopen.

MDOT spokeswoman Diane Cross said the I-75 ramp will remain closed until at least Friday.
