MANTORVILLE, MN : Man, 48, killed in high-speed crash on Friday, 23rd March 2018
A 48-year-old man from the Mantorville area is dead after a high-speed, one-car crash Friday on Dodge County Road 16, less than a half-mile northwest of Mantorville.
The accident occurred Friday morning not long before a passerby reported the crash scene to Dodge County authorities at 10:06 a.m.
The vehicle, a blue 2008 Chevrolet Corvette, was found “pretty mangled” several hundred feet off the roadway by Dodge County Sheriff’s deputies, who the first to arrive, said Capt. Ryer Anderson of the sheriff’s office.
Authorities determined the car had been traveling east on the county road at a “high rate of speed,” Anderson said. The car veered onto the right gravel shoulder; the driver overcorrected and swerved across the paved road, over the north ditch, through a treeline and into a field. The driver was not wearing a seat belt. He was ejected from the car. It is not yet determined if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Debris from the sports car was found over a 300-foot path along the car’s path off travel off the roadway.
The driver is a local man. Authorities are not identifying him as they attempt to contact family members, who are not themselves local, Anderson said. There were no other passengers in the car. It was apparent from the condition of the driver that the accident had happened not long before it was reported, he said.
The Mayo One helicopter and Dodge County ambulance were both initially called to the scene but canceled before they arrived. The Mantorville Fire Department assisted, and the Minnesota State Patrol was called in to mark and map the scene. The Dodge County coroner and a chaplain both responded to the scene.
