Lavonia, GA : One killed after tractor-trailer crashes into trees on I-85 early Wednesday, October 29, 2014
Drivers headed south from South Carolina into Georgia on Interstate 85 should expect delays after a fatal crash early Wednesday.
Georgia Department of Transportation reported the wreck about 6:20 a.m. saying it involved two trucks at mile marker 172 in Lavonia.
Lavonia Fire Chief Scott O'Barr said about 6 a.m. a tandem tractor-trailer ran off the interstate and crashed into large trees, catching fire.
O'Barr said it took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish a majority of the fire and once they made access to the truck, they discovered one person dead inside the cab.
Firefighters continued to fight the fire in the truck's trailer and had to stop traffic because one tree fell into the roadway, causing a traffic hazard, according to O'Barr.
The left lane has since re-opened but the accident scene was not expected to be cleared until at least noon.
The Georgia State Patrol and the coroner's office are investigating the wreck. The victim's name has not been released.
