Roanoke, VA : Vinton man killed in Bedford County crash involving school bus on Friday morning, March 10, 2017
A crash Friday morning in Bedford County involving a school bus killed a Vinton man, according to state police.
Sgt. Rick Garletts, spokesman for the Virginia State Police, said in an email that a three-vehicle wreck occurred at 7:39 a.m. at the intersection of Joppa Mill Road and Virginia 24 (Stewartsville Road).
Garletts said a 1993 Chevrolet Geo Tracker was heading east on Virginia 24 with a 2005 Ford F-250 pickup truck traveling behind it.
The Tracker was slowing to make a left turn when the truck crossed the center line, sideswiped the Tracker and struck a westbound Bedford County school bus head on. The driver of the pickup truck, Travis Jay Snyder, 29, of Vinton, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, Garletts said.
A 17-year-old boy from Moneta was driving the Tracker and Glenn E. Montgomery, 65, of Goodview, was driving the school bus. Both were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash; they weren’t injured. There were no children on the bus at the time.
Bedford County public schools spokesman Ryan Edwards said the bus was just starting its route, heading out to pick up students for Staunton River Middle School and Staunton River High School. The bus driver was “shaken” but is expected to be fine, he said.
