Monroe County, IN : Bloomington Realtor dies in a three-car crash on Ind. 37 and West Tapp Road Monday morning, May 2, 2016
A Bloomington Realtor died in a three-car accident at the intersection of Ind. 37 and West Tapp Road Monday morning.
James Sprague Jr., 69, was pronounced dead at IU Health Bloomington Hospital, according to a news release from Sgt. Curt Durnil of the Indiana State Police.
A 2005 Hyundai sedan, driven by 31-year-old Ryan M. Kimbrel, of Mitchell, was heading north on Ind. 37 and approaching the intersection about 8:50 a.m. Monday.
"For unknown reasons, Kimbrel drove the Hyundai from the left lane into the right lane, where vehicles were stopped for a red light," according to Durnil.
Police say Kimbrel's Hyundai first sideswiped a stopped 2014 Toyota sedan, driven by 31-year-old Rachel L. Whitson, who was not injured.
After striking the first car, Kimbrel's car continued north and into the intersection against a red traffic light, colliding with Sprague's 2013 Toyota, according to police. Sprague had been turning south onto Ind. 37 from Tapp Road during a green left arrow, police said.
An accident investigation continues, and Kimbrel was taken to the hospital for a blood draw. Members of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Bloomington Police Department and the Perry-Clear Creek Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Sprague was a well-known Bloomington Realtor and guitar player.
