A sophomore at Big Sky High School succumbed Thursday to injuries suffered in a single-car crash Wednesday night on U.S. Highway 93 southwest of Missoula.

The Missoula County coroner identified the victim as Arthur Lowder, 15, who was better known as "Abe."

Lowder was the passenger in a Volvo sedan traveling toward Lolo that lost control and went off the highway in front of Fred’s Appliance near Blue Mountain Road.

The car did not overturn, but came to a sudden stop in an irrigation ditch, according to Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Shawn Sullivan.

A posting on Valley Christian School's Facebook page by head of school Anthony Baugher said Lowder's sister Grace, a Valley Christian student, was seriously injured in the crash.

Sullivan said the fatal victim was wearing a seat belt.

The crash was reported about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. According to the city’s daily public report, multiple ambulances, rural fire and city police units were on the scene along with MHP.
