26 cows were killed when a truck carrying cattle crashed in Minden

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports that 26 cows were killed when a truck carrying cattle crashed in Minden.

Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Gabor Visnovits said the truck driver failed to yield at the intersection of Highway 88 and Waterloo Lane in Douglas County and collided with a Subaru on Tuesday afternoon.

Sixty-six cows were on the truck. Surviving cows were taken to a local ranch.

The crash knocked out power for 2,377 people from Minden to the Gardnerville Ranchos.

The stop light at U.S. Highway 395 and Highway 88 was back on by 6:20 p.m., and power had been restored to most of the businesses along Highway 88.

The crash occurred 3:43 p.m. Tuesday.

One person was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, said Sgt. Pat Brooks of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

A NV Energy crew was at the scene of the crash Tuesday night.

Brooks said that once all the cows were unloaded from the semi-trailer, the power company likely would be able to work on the lines and restore electricity.

Firefighters and Douglas County deputies were keeping bystanders out of the way of charged lines, as well as the cattle as they were removed from the truck.
