Alexandria,LA : Alexandria police officer dies in crash on January, Wednesday 17th 2018

An Alexandria Police Department officer died Wednesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash near Dry Prong.

The crash happened around 5:50 p.m. on U.S. Highway 167, south of Dry Prong near Brunson Road. Deville resident Travis L. Lowe, 53, was driving a 2017 GMC pickup truck when he lost control and ran off the road.

The truck crossed the median and the northbound lanes, then hit a large tree, reads a Louisiana State Police release.

Lowe, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Rapides Regional Trauma Center. He died at the hospital.

"Road conditions, speed or impairment are not considered factors in the crash," reads the release.

Lowe was a sergeant who had served with the department for 23 years.

"Sgt. Lowe was a warm, friendly man and a fine officer," read a post on the department's Facebook page late Wednesday. "He served with APD for 23 years and showed exemplary service to our department and to the citizens of Alexandria. He often came in to work early to visit with his colleagues before he began his shift, sharing coffee and laughs. The station will not be the same without him."

The crash remains under investigation.
