Helena-West Helena, AR : Transportation department worker killed when struck by truck trailer near Helena-West Helena on Wednesday, September 17, 2014
Authorities say an Arkansas highway worker was killed when he was struck by a truck trailer while changing a stop sign near Helena-West Helena.
Arkansas State Police say 59-year-old John Barefield of Marvell was replacing the sign at the intersection of Arkansas 20 and U.S. Highway 49 when he was struck Wednesday.
An accident report says the truck was eastbound on Arkansas 20 when the driver stopped, then was making a left turn when Barefield was hit by the trailer.
Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department spokesman Jeff Whatley says Barefield was a street sweeper and operator and had worked for the department since 1996.
