One man was killed and a teenager injured in a two-vehicle accident in Frenchtown Township Wednesday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Samuel Venier, 71, of Monroe. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, an 18-year-old woman from Newport, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Michigan State Police of the Monroe post reported the accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Newport and War Rds.
Troopers reported a 2000 Ford Taurus driven by Venier was stopped at the intersection. Witnesses and evidence indicated Venier proceeded to turn west on Newport from War, failing to yield to an oncoming vehicle.
The 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling east on Newport struck the Taurus in the driver’s side. The teenager was transported to Beaumont Hospital, Trenton, for treatment of her injuries.
Troopers said neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash. Troopers were assisted by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Frenchtown Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance.
