Iowa City, IA : Names released in fatal collision near Lone Tree on Wednesday, December 7th, 2016
One person is dead and two are injured after a two-vehicle collision near Lone Tree.
The crash occurred at 6:19 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Highway 22 and Wapsi Avenue just north of Lone Tree and involved an SUV and a semi, according to Sgt. Brad Kunkel of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
Barthelemy Elson, 31, of Coralville died at the scene, according to an Iowa State Patrol Crash Report, while Bahaiti Kasongo, 27, also of Coralville was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by AirCare and Eangano Mamona Hamisi, 35, of North Liberty was taken to UIHC via ambulance.
The three were riding in a 2012 Kia Sorento, which was being driven by Hamisi, the crash report said. They were crossing Highway 22 going southbound when their SUV was hit broadside by an eastbound semi truck, sending the Kia into the ditch and causing the semi to come to rest on the road's shoulder.
The semi was driven by Derek Koger Kriegel, 28, of Chelsea, Iowa, who was not injured, according to the report.
The roadway was partially blocked after the crash, and was reopened around 9 a.m., according to Kunkel.
The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash with assistance from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, officials said. The Lone Tree Fire Department, Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement and Johnson County Medical Examiner's Office also responded to the scene.
