Salem,OR : Highway 22 closed following fuel tanker crash on December, Sunday 17th 2017

Officials are warning drivers to stick to established detours on state highways while Highway 22 remains closed east of Detroit to the intersection with Highway 20 near the Santiam Pass.

Oregon State Police dispatchers received reports of drivers following routes suggested by GPS units and software that directed them to snow-covered forest roads.

The department says one driver became stuck in the snow while another ran out of gas attempting to navigate backroads.

Drivers depending on technology were similarly led back to danger during wildfires in Southern California earlier this month.
