QUARTZSITE, AZ : Dust storm leads to fatal crash on Arizona-California border on Tuesday, 16th August, 2016
Authorities have identified an Arizona woman killed in one of five accidents involving 14 vehicles after a dust storm cut visibility to zero on Interstate 10 near the California border.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say 76-year-old Susan Bartholomew of Litchfield Park was declared dead at the scene of one of the accidents Monday afternoon east of Quartzsite.
They say the car Bartholomew was driving was crushed between two commercial tractor-trailer rigs during zero-visibility conditions around 2:30 p.m.
DPS officials say troopers investigated three non-injury collisions involving eight vehicles, an injury collision involving three vehicles and a fatal collision involving three vehicles in a 2 ½-hour span.
They say the freeway wasn’t completely reopened until 7 p.m.
