NORTH PORT, FL : Driver in fatal North Port crashed charged with DUI manslaughter on Wednesday, 1st January, 2020
An Uber passenger was killed on New Year’s Eve after their car was struck by an impaired driver, the North Port Police Department said.
At 6:09 p.m. on Tuesday, two passengers using the ride-sharing app were seated in the backseat of a 2018 Toyota Camry that collided with a 2008 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Mark Barcia of North Port.
The North Port Police Department and the North Poert Fire Department responded to the crash and found one of the backseat passengers dead at the scene. The Camry driver and another passenger were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital as trauma alerts but are expected to recover, police said.
The driver of the pickup truck, Mark Barcia, 41, of North Port was suspected of driving under the influence and was subsequently arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter, two counts of DUI with serious bodily injury, DUI with personal injury and DUI with property damage.
Barcia, who works in security, has bonds totaling $1,000 on two counts of DUI with serious bodily injury. However, no bond was set for the remaining charges.
