Angola, IN : Ohio man killed after a car and semi collided on I-69 in Steuben County on Monday, December 28, 2015
A northwestern Ohio man was killed midday Monday in Steuben County after he lost control of his car on an ice-covered bridge along Interstate 69 and slammed into a guardrail then into the path of a semi.
Investigators said around 12:40 p.m., a car and a semi collided near the 340 mile marker on I-69, which is near the Ashley exit.
Deputies reported a Freightliner semi driven by Glen Maltman, 53, of Belding, Michigan, was southbound in the interstate’s driving lane following a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by 68-year-old Marion Garrison of Fayette, Ohio.
As Garrison drove his sedan over an ice-covered railroad bridge, he started to lose control, deputies reported. As Maltman moved his semi over, he watched as Garrison’s Mercury veered off the roadway and slammed into a guardrail.
The impact, then, spun the car around and into the path of the semi. The Freightliner hit the Mercury in its passenger side, deputies said.
Garrison was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner from blunt force trauma. He was not wearing a seatbelt and the car’s airbags did not deploy, deputies said.
Maltman was uninjured in the crash. Lynette Maltman, who had been asleep in the sleeper portion of the tractor, suffered minor leg pain and was transported to Cameron Hospital by Steuben County EMS.
After the crash, the sheriff’s department cautioned motorists, saying road surfaces throughout the county were covered in ice and extremely slippery.
The Ashley Police Department echoed that plea on Facebook asking people in the area “please slow down.”
Ashley is about 48 miles north of Fort Wayne.
