Union County, NC : Three people injured in two-vehicle accident on Lancaster Highway near Martin Luther King Boulevard on Tuesday morning, June 23, 2015

A highway in Union County is shut down following a two-vehicle accident that injured three people early Tuesday morning.

The crash happened around 3:41 a.m. on Lancaster Highway near Martin Luther King Boulevard, not far from Calvary Baptist Church.

Officials say two cars were traveling southbound on Lancaster Highway when one car tried to pass the other in a no-pass zone and didn't have enough space.

The car clipped the other car it was attempting to pass. One car went into a ditch and the car that was clipped hit a utility pole. That's when officials say a transformer fell on the car, catching it on fire.

Power was out at several nearby homes. One man in the car that caught fire was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in serious condition. Two men in the other car were taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Union with minor injuries.

Officials say speed and reckless driving were factors in the crash.

The north and southbound lanes of Lancaster Highway are expected to remain closed until at least 7:30 a.m.

No word on possible charges.
