LOS ANGELES, CA : 1 dead after car falls off overpass onto 110 Freeway in downtown LA on Thursday, December 29th 2016
A woman was killed Thursday when a vehicle flew off a freeway overpass and onto the northbound lanes of the 110 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles.
The crash occurred at 3:58 a.m. just north of Third Street, said California Highway Patrol Officer Dion Conley. The vehicle went off the Third Street overpass and fell onto the northbound lanes, he said.
The Los Angeles Fire Department conducted a “body recovery operation” for a 50-year-old woman, said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Brian Humphrey of the fire department said later the woman was the only patient who was “sadly beyond our help.”
The vehicle struck multiple cars when it landed and caused multiple crashes but information about other injuries was not immediately available. Conley said he also did not immediately know how many people were inside the vehicle.
CHP public information officer Juan Galvan said the fallen vehicle landed on its roof and blocked the fast lane before at least one vehicle struck it.
“It’s still under investigation,” Galvan said about the crash.
All northbound lanes were closed at Third Street for the investigation.
“The whole freeway was shut down the early part of the morning,” Galvan said, before a far right “collector road” taking drivers to downtown exits and a slow lane were later opened.
A SigAlert, which began at 4:16 a.m., was cancelled at 8:20 a.m., Galvan added.
The public information officer said he did not know what caused the crash.
