FRANKLIN TWP, PA : 2 taken to hospital after ice blows off semi-trailer, causing 2-vehicle crash on Wednesday, 14th February 2024
Two people were taken to the hospital after a chunk of ice blew off of a semi-trailer, causing a two-vehicle crash, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
A vehicle was traveling in the right northbound lane of the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, in Franklin Township, Carbon County, shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Witnesses said a large-sized piece of ice blew off of a semi-trailer, while it was in the southbound lane, state police said. The ice chunk impacted the vehicle in the right northbound lane, as it broke through the windshield and impacted the vehicle's driver, according to state police.
After the impact, state police say the driver swerved, striking another vehicle.
No additional information concerning the semi-trailer could be determined at this time, state police said. The investigation continues.
The driver of the first vehicle was taken to the hospital for injuries he sustained during the crash, state police said.
The second vehicle's driver was transported to the hospital for possible injuries she sustained during the crash.
