Marion County, FL : 55-year-old man killed in single-car crash in Marion County Friday night on June 20, 2014
A Tampa man was killed Friday night in a single-car crash in Marion County, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
James Alfred Whelchel, 55, was traveling east on County Road 316 around 5:30 p.m.
Whelchel lost control of his Dodge Durango while traveling in the left curve within the roadway. He attempted to correct the vehicle, but he wasn’t able to maintain control, the report states.
Whelchel’s SUV traveled off the roadway and onto the south shoulder, colliding with a fence and then striking a tree.
He was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Whelchel wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, and an alcohol test is pending, the report states.
