Pottstown, PA : Pedestrian killed in Route 422 crash on Wednesday, February 1st 2017
A pedestrian was killed after he was struck by two vehicles while attempting to cross a busy stretch of Route 422.
According to Exeter Police, officers were called to the middle of the 4600 block of Route 422 (also known as Perkiomen Avenue) at around 6:50 p.m. Wednesday for a vehicle crash with injuries. Once police arrived, they determined that a Hispanic male in his 60s had been trying to cross Perkiomen Avenue when he was struck by two vehicles.
The man suffered fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured in the crash. The drivers of both vehicles stopped after striking the victim and cooperated with police. Police have not released the names of the drivers.
The victim was identified Thursday by the Berks County Coroner’s Office as Alcides Garcia-Renta, 63, of Reading.
Police said Garcia-Renta attempted to cross the busy stretch of highway mid-block, not at the designate crosswalk at Route 422 and West 47th Street, which is controlled by traffic signals.
Eastbound lanes of Route 422 were closed for approximately two hours and traffic was diverted via a service alley that connects the highway to West 47th Street, police said.
Exeter Fire Department and EMS, Lower Alsace EMS and Exeter Township Fire Police assisted on the scene.
