Virginia State Police is investigating a hit-and-run crash in Amherst County involving a sheriff's deputy early Sunday.
According to the Amherst County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, the deputy was responding to a shots fired call on Main Street in Madison Heights and had his emergency equipment activated.Shortly before 1 a.m. the deputy was driving south on U.S. 29 in Madison Heights when a black 2003 Dodge Stratus failed to yield to the deputy's oncoming vehicle, a news release from VSP said. The Dodge Stratus made a left turn in front of the deputy's vehicle, and despite the deputy's efforts the two vehicles collided, the release said.
The impact forced the Dodge Stratus to spin around and the deputy's vehicle to run off the road, into a utility pole and overturn onto its roof, the release said. The utility pole was broken, the sheriff's office Facebook post said.
The 27-year-old male deputy was wearing a seatbelt and only suffered minor injuries, according to police.
"It is believed that there were a total of three people in the Dodge Stratus, all of whom fled the scene on foot," the release said.
Anyone with information concerning the incident or the individuals in the Dodge Stratus is asked to call VSP at (434) 352-7128 or #77 on a cell phone.
