Havelock, NC : Driver injured after crash on U.S. 70 and Catawba Road on Wednesday afternoon, August 17, 2016

The driver of a passenger car was airlifted to the hospital after colliding with an SUV full of vacationers Wednesday afternoon in Havelock.

The wreck happened around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 70 and Catawba Road when a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Steven Mott, of Rocky Mount, collided with a silver Buick Lucerne.

The driver of the Buick, whose name was not immediately available, was airlifted via EastCare helicopter to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. His condition was not available.

Mott said he and six members of his family were attempting to turn left from U.S. 70 West onto Catawba Road when the wreck happened. Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage. The impact caused airbags to deploy on both vehicles.

Havelock rescue personnel had to use an extrication device to remove the driver’s door of the smaller vehicle to get the driver out.

The EastCare helicopter landed in the parking lot of the Westbrooke Shopping Center to transport the man.

Mott said the SUV was loaded with his aunt, his wife, two cousins, and two young children. The family was on a day trip to the beach when the wreck happened.

Mott’s wife sustained a minor ankle injury. One of the passengers, Richard Clapper, of Newville, Pennsylvania, said a couple of the passengers had whiplash from the impact.

The Havelock Police Department is investigating the crash.

The wreck slowed traffic in the area for about 45 minutes.
