HUNTSVILLE, AL : Second victim in Monday crash dies on Monday, January, 15th 2018
Montgomery Creek, Alabama
The husband of a woman who died Monday after being involved in a crash on Alabama 20 has died at Huntsville Hospital.
Cpl. Bill Burke of the Quad-Cities State Trooper’s Post said James Hillard Skipworth, 81, Hightower Road, Florence, died Wednesday morning.
Burke said authorities were notified about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday that Skipworth had died from injuries he sustained in the accident.
Cpl. Scott Simpson said Tuesday that Skipworth’s wife, Joann Skipworth, 81, died Monday evening at Huntsville Hospital.
Burke said the two-car accident happened at 3:35 p.m. Monday on Alabama 20, near Lauderdale 228, in the Central Heights community, which is west of Florence.
Firefighters from Central and Oakland volunteer departments responded to the accidents and landed two helicopters at the scene.
Emergency medical officials said the man and his wife were both flown from the scene to Huntsville Hospital.
The Skipworths were in a 2017 Toyota Rav4 that collided head-on with a 1999 Jeep driven by Tamra Sharp, 59, Florence.
Firefighters had to remove the passenger side door of the Skipworths’ car before they could get Joann Skipworth out of the vehicle.
According to Huntsville Hospital officials, Sharp is good condition.
She was taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital from the scene, and then transported to Huntsville Hospital, according to ECM officials.
Emergency personnel said the two cars hit head-on in the southbound lane. Officials at the scene said it was hard to tell which car was going which direction because of the severity of the crash.
James Skipworth is the fifth person to be killed in traffic accidents so far this year in northwest Alabama and the southern Tennessee counties of Wayne and Lawrence counties.
