A Cherryville man has died nine days after police say he was hit by an impaired driver.

The three-vehicle collision happened on Monday, Sept. 18, on Cherryville Road near Jess Hord Road in Cleveland County.

Gregory Davis, 46, of Cherryville, was one of five people involved in the wreck.

According to Highway Patrol, Tony Story, 39, of Waco, was under the influence of an impairing substance when he got behind the wheel of his Mitsubishi Eclipse in that wreck. As he was driving north on Cherryville Road, he crossed the double yellow line, investigators say. Story’s car struck a black 200 Nissan then Davis’ 1992 white GMC pick-up truck, driven by Davis, head-on causing it to roll down an embankment and land on its roof, according to reports from Highway Patrol.

Davis was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He succumbed to his injuries on Sept. 27, and his family laid him to rest Saturday, Sept. 30.
