Lorain, OH : Man with prior OVIs crashes into Lorain cruiser on Friday, January 27th 2017
After crashing into a Lorain police cruiser around 7:50 p.m. on Jan. 27, a Lorain man with four priors was charged with driving under the influence for the fifth time, according to a Lorain police report.
Mark Daniel Keener, 37, of West 35th Street, was arrested in the area of Tower Boulevard and Washington Avenue after failing a number of standardized field sobriety tests, the report said. Keener struck a sergeant’s patrol vehicle in the outside westbound lane of Tower Boulevard while the sergeant was seated inside it with a warrant subject, the report said.
According to the report, both the cruiser and Keener’s red 2000 GMC Sierra sustained extensive damage.
Keener told officers he was uninjured, but the report noted the suspect had bloodshot, glassy eyes and the odor of an alcoholic beverage was coming from the his vehicle. Several open beer cans were also observed on the floorboard.
The suspect claimed he drank three beers over the course of a couple of hours with the most recent being about one hour before the crash. Keener told officers he was on his way to a fast food restaurant on Oberlin Avenue prior to the crash occurring.
Upon failing the standardized field sobriety tests, Keener was placed under arrest for OVI. The report indicated Keener refused the breath test once brought on station and a review of his criminal history revealed he has four prior OVI convictions within the last 20 years.
