Lake County, IN : Merrillville man airlifted from I-65 crash on Thursday, July 14, 2016

A Merrillville man was seriously injured Thursday after losing control of his minivan on I-65 in Lake County, the Indiana State Police said.

According to police, at 9:45 p.m. Jason Seiger, 41, was southbound on I-65 near 61st Ave., in a construction zone where the middle lane is closed. Police said that Seiger attempted to change lanes by going through the construction zone--to reach the far right lane to exit onto 61st Ave.--and lost control of his 2002 Chevrolet Astro.

The Astro rolled several times and came to rest on its left side in a ditch on the west side of the road, police said. Seiger’s passenger, Jeremy Moats, 26, of Crown Point, was able to exit the Astro on his own but Seiger had to be extricated by the Merrillville Fire Department, police said.

All southbound lanes of I-65 were subsequently closed to allow for the landing of a medivac helicopter which airlifted Seiger to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., police said, while Moats was transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary with non-life threatening injuries.
