A Campti teen is dead following a head-on crash with an 18-wheeler Monday afternoon.
Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's deputies say around 2:30 p.m. a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck going north on US-71 crossed the center line of the highway for an unknown reason. The truck was driven by 18 –year-old Reilly Cade Runnels of the 100 block of Billy Stiles Road, Campti, La.
Runnels collided head-on with a southbound 2013 Freightliner truck driven by Xavier S. Snell Jr., 26, of San Antonio, Texas.
Runnels, a student at BPCC at Northwestern State University, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Natchitoches Parish Coroner's Office. Deputies say he was wearing a seat belt.
Snell was reportedly uninjured in the crash.
Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies say US-71 was closed until approximately 6:30 p.m. while emergency crews cleared the roadway.
No citations have been issued.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash but routine toxicology samples were taken on both drivers for analysis.
The Campti Police, Louisiana State Police, Natchitoches EMS Paramedics, Natchitoches Fire District #9 and Natchitoches Hazmat responded to the wreck to help the sheriff's office.
The crash is being investigated by Campti Police Department assisted by Louisiana State Police.
