KEWANEE, IL : Woman killed in Saturday accident south of Kewanee on Saturday, March 18th 2017
One person is dead following a Saturday afternoon accident south of Kewanee on what police have called a dangerous stretch of U.S. 34/Illinois 78.
Lucille Kemerling, 86, of Kewanee, was pronounced dead at the scene of a three-vehicle accident at 12:50 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 34/Illinois 78 at Flex Court.
According to the Henry County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle driven by Bradly Simmons, 31, of Kewanee, was stopped in the southbound lane of the highway waiting to turn left into Flex Court when a Ford Escape, driven by Destiny Gibson, 18, of Toulon, failed to stop behind him. Ms. Gibson struck Mr. Simmons, with both vehicles overturning onto their tops, one of them landing in the northbound lane.
According to the sheriff's office, Monroe Kemerling, 86, of Kewanee, was driving a Chrysler Town and Country minivan in the northbound lane and swerved to avoid the overturned vehicle. He entered a ditch and struck a culvert, causing the van to roll several times before coming to rest on its top.
Ms. Kemerling was killed in the accident. Mr. Kemerling was taken to OSF Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee, where he was treated and released.
Ms. Gibson and the two occupants of the Simmons vehicle declined medical treatment. Two passengers in Ms. Gibson's vehicle were not injured.
Mr. Simmons was ticketed for no insurance. Ms. Gibson was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Henry County Sheriff's Office Capt. Captain Kerry Loncka said the stretch of road is dangerous, with several businesses as well as vehicles speeding up as they leave Kewanee.
