Sacramento, CA : Three people died in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 80 in Sacramento on Tuesday, May 12, 2015
Three men killed Tuesday morning in a wrong-way crash along Interstate 80 were identified as being from the Bay Area.
Nicholas Sharma, 24, from Hayward and 25-year-old Zahid Arshad from South San Francisco died early Tuesday morning. They were driving a Lexus along I-80 near Madison Avenue around 12:30 a.m. when a pickup truck came at them going the wrong way on the highway.
The truck and Lexus crashed, causing the truck to catch on fire. The driver of the truck also died. The driver has not been identified at this time.
The CHP officer who initially responded to the scene tried to pull the pickup truck driver from the burning vehicle, but the flames took over the driver's seat before the officer could free him. Officers are investigating what led to the pickup truck driver to travel the the wrong way on the highway.
"We suspect a DUI because normal, sober people don't get on the freeway on the wrong way in the middle of the night. But we don't know for sure, it's under investigation," CHP spokesperson Chad Hertzell said.
The crash closed westbound lanes of I-80 for a few hours, and reopened to traffic around 5:30 a.m.
