Nevada City, CA : Thomas Force, 60, killed in a solo motorcycle crash on on Red Dog Road on Thursday afternoon, February 12, 2015

A 60-year-old man died Thursday afternoon when the motorcycle he was riding crashed in Nevada County.

The crash occurred about 3:50 p.m. as the man, identified by the California Highway Patrol as Thomas B. Force of Nevada City, was riding a Harley-Davidson Road King motorcycle eastbound on Red Dog Road. He was wearing an unapproved, novelty-style helmet, and witnesses reported seeing him recklessly passing other eastbound vehicles by crossing over the double-yellow lines on the narrow roadway, according to a CHP news release.

As Force neared the area of Allen Road, east of Murchie Mine Road, the motorcycle lost traction. It slid into the center of the roadway, where it overturned multiple times before landing on top of the rider, causing extensive injuries, according to the CHP.

Passing motorists stopped to provide aid. Emergency medical personnel arrived and administered CPR, but they were unable to revive Force, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the collision, according to the CHP, but a toxicology test will be performed as part of an autopsy in conjunction with the coroner’s investigation.

Red Dog Road was blocked for approximately three hours while the crash scene was investigated.
