A motorist who had been stopped by the Colorado State Patrol on westbound Interstate 70 west of Silt was killed Wednesday, and a state trooper was injured, when the pulled-over vehicle was struck by another westbound vehicle.?The trooper and the driver of the second vehicle were taken to an area hospital, the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Trooper Josh Lewis, a State Patrol spokesman, said the trooper suffered moderate injuries. The names of the trooper and the others involved in the accident have not yet been released.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. and forced the closure of westbound I-70 at Silt and the diversion of traffic onto U.S. Highway 6 to Rifle. The detour was still in place Wednesday evening.

Lewis referred questions about the accident to the Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating. Sheriff’s spokesman Walt Stowe said interviews were being conducted at the hospital and with witnesses on the scene, and he expected the investigation to continue for a couple of days.
