Salem ,OR : Car crashes into bedroom on Saturday ,July 18th 2015
Felicia Call, 18, named her first car, a 1989 Toyota Camry, Frederick, after civil rights leader Frederick Douglass.
On Saturday morning, Frederick ended up in the neighbor's house, nearly hitting two young girls who were sleeping.
"'Where's Frederick?'" Call recalled saying to herself. "I'm, like, 'He's in the house. What's going on?'"
The Marion County Fire District said driver Andres Espinoza Chavez was driving down Herrin Road NE in Salem early Saturday morning when he hit Call's car so hard that it crashed into a neighbor's house.
"[I felt] utter panic," said Call. "I am personally glad the daughters are okay."
Officials said two girls, Paloma, 5, and Danica, 4, were sleeping in their beds at the time.
Amanda Davis, Call's mother, said Paloma took her inside the house and showed her how the car pushed her bed several feet.
"That's when my heart actually stopped, and I said, 'Sweetie, you're alive! You're alive, and you're doing well, and I'm just so glad you are!' Davis said. "She could have been gone."
"You can replace a car, you can fix a house, but you can't replace a child," she added.
Paloma's mother said she did not want to talk about the crash on Saturday afternoon because the family was tired and overwhelmed. But she said that she is relieved the girls were not hurt.
Marion County Sheriff's deputies said Espinoza Chavez was arrested for drunk driving. They said he was not in a condition to be taken to jail, so he was taken to the hospital for treatment, where he was cited and released.
