Fort Morgan, CO : 8-year-old killed in accident outside Fort Morgan on Wednesday, February 2nd 2017
Colorado State troopers responded to a weather related accident around 4 p.m. on Wednesday on state Highway 52 involving two vehicles. The icy road conditions are to blame for the accident that injured six and killed one person, according to the report filed by the Colorado State Patrol.
A 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by a 16-year-old female of Fort Morgan was headed east on Highway 52 with icy conditions on the roadway. The second vehicle, a 2001 GMC Yukon driven by Sarah Braun, 30, of Log Lane Village was headed west.
The driver of the Cavalier lost control of her vehicle at mile marker 99 on a left-hand curve. The vehicle began to rotate counterclockwise on the highway. The driver over-corrected, and the Cavalier went off the right side of the road.
In an attempt to regain control of her vehicle, she over-corrected again and re-entered the highway. The Cavalier skidded into the westbound lane and collided head-on into the front of the Yukon.
The Cavalier came to a rest facing north on its wheels. The Yukon came to a rest facing south on its wheels.
The state patrol and Morgan County Ambulance Service responded to the accident. The driver of the Cavalier suffered serious injuries, and she and a 5-year-old male, who was also in the car, were transported to Colorado Plains Medical Center (CPMC) in Fort Morgan. The third occupant of the vehicle, an 8-year-old female, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Yukon was carrying four passengers and the driver. Braun suffered serious injuries and was transported to CPMC. All of the passengers of the vehicle were minors. One 8-year-old male suffered serious injuries, and another 8-year-old had minor injuries. A 6-year-old female also suffered minor injuries. A 1-year-old male, who was in a child safety seat, suffered minor injuries. All were transported by ambulance to CPMC.
