A 13-year-old Grand Rapids boy was killed Thursday in a traffic crash on I-96 when he and eight others in a vehicle were ejected onto the roadway, police say.
The crash, which killed Qumele Marshall, was reported at 4:41 p.m. July 2 in the eastbound lanes near M-100 in Eagle Township, Michigan State Police say.
A witness told authorities on scene an SUV traveling east on I-96 appeared to lose control and struck another eastbound vehicle. The impact caused the first vehicle to roll, and nine occupants, ranging in age from an infant to a grandmother, were ejected.
Eight people were transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening, police say. An Aeromed helicopter was used to transport one of those patients.
Those in the second vehicle were not injured.
Police say alcohol did not appear to be a factor but the use of seat belts is "unknown." The eastbound lanes of I-96 were closed for about 3 1/2 hours for the crash investigation.
The Clinton County Sheriff's Department assisted on scene, along with Delta Township Fire/Rescue, Grand Ledge Area Fire, Portland and Mercy Ambulance companies and Aeromed
