Chico, CA : Motorcyclist injured in wreck on The Esplanade on Monday afternoon, May 23, 2016

A motorcyclist was hospitalized Monday afternoon following a wreck at the intersection of First Avenue and The Esplanade, police said.

The incident occurred about 4:45 p.m., when a motorcyclist traveling west on First Avenue and a Ford pickup traveling north on The Esplanade collided in the intersection, Chico police officer Jason Jueckstock said at the scene of the crash.

The motorcyclist, who was driving a Suzuki GS500, was taken to Enloe Medical Center, Jueckstock said. The extent of the rider’s injuries was not immediately known.

The officer said he could not immediately release the names of the motorcyclist or the driver of the Ford pickup.

The pickup, a gold Ford Ranger, appeared to have sustained significant damage to its front passenger side and windshield.

Jueckstock said the cause of the crash was not yet known.

The wreck happened at a time when The Esplanade has drawn additional scrutiny by Chico police. Following the City Council’s about-face regarding the construction of roundabouts on The Esplanade at the intersections of First Avenue and Memorial Way, the Police Department said earlier this month it would begin a “high-profile” effort to enforce traffic laws on the iconic boulevard.
