West Chester, PA : 2 injured in Devon collision on Thursday, February 23, 2017
Two women were taken to Paoli Trauma Center following a serious accident at South Fairfield and Sugartown roads in Devon just after 2 p.m. Thursday, officials said.
The accident occurred across from Devon Elementary School, no children were involved, however Easttown police alerted the school of the incident. Both drivers were reported trapped in the vehicles. Berwyn Fire Co. responded and used hydraulic cutting tools to remove the roof of a Lexus to remove a female from the vehicle.
Margie Kelly of Rosemont was approaching the stop sign on South Fairfield Road when she saw the accident occur in front of her.
“I saw it happen but I couldn’t tell which car was which,” Kelly said. “Two black cars flying through the air,” she said after Berwyn and Radnor ambulances had removed the victims. “I was worried about my safety and backed up to avoid it.”
The Lexus ended up wedged between a fence and a telephone poll. The Chevrolet crashed into the pole. Stop signs are located on Fairfield Road, while Sugartown Road has the right-of-way. It was unclear which directions the cars were traveling when they collided.
Easton police Sgt. Roy LaRue said both drivers had injuries that were serious enough that they need to be checked out at the hospital. No further information was available. LaRue said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
The owner of the home, who did not wish to be identified, said there had been another weekday accident at the same intersection just a few months ago with that car ending up on its roof. Police said that they don’t have any data that the intersection has more than at the normal number of accidents.
Tow trucks from Conestoga Collision had the road cleared by 3 p.m. shortly before school let out.
