Newport News, VA : West Point woman dies in a crash on I-64 in James City County on Tuesday, July 19, 2016

A 36-year-old West Point woman died in a crash on Interstate 64 on Tuesday, police say.

Heather Lee Edwards, of the 700 block of Bagby Street, died when she lost control of her 2010 Hyundai Elantra and hit an embankment and then a tree, said Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

The vehicle caught fire, and Edwards wasn't able to escape the car after the accident and died on the scene, Anaya said.

The crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. in James City County near the Croaker exit in the interstate's westbound lanes, Anaya said.
